Recently, I added trim work to the ceiling of my son's room. It has taken the appeal of his bedroom to the next level. Here's an image before the trim work was installed four inches from the where the wall and ceiling meet. I did this style of trim to keep the eye traveling around the perimeter of his room.
Compare the two, the trim work finishes the room. When you walk into the room it is very striking.
This trim work was done in my dining room. I wanted every single detail to be addressed to really create an impact and to make a grand statement.
This is the ceiling in a client's home. We did a coffered ceiling and added a medallion to her dining room. The room was instantly transformed and looked stunning before we added one piece of furniture. Due to the high ceiling we were able to do the coffered look, whereas in the above photos with eight foot ceilings that would not have worked.
Do you consider ceilings in your design?
I love the difference in your son's room. I have a beautiful deep red bathroom and I went for pop and had the ceiling painted silver. So fun! xx

Absolutely, I have 2 rooms with painted ceilings and two rooms with molding on the ceilings very much like what you have in your pictures. I need molding in my dining room and family room and that is on my list. I think it is like a beautiful hat or necklace to an outfit. Finished ceiling are a must, I consider them the 5th wall. ReplyDeleteWhen I am consulting with clients, they need to be led gently into considering the ceiling, as KathySue said, as the fifth wall. It's the period or exclamation point to the room.

ReplyDeleteI always add crown molding but don't often add trim to the ceiling other than coffered. I cannot get over the difference in your son's room. Really makes the room pop!
ReplyDeleteAbsolutely! I just finished a job where I finally convinced the homeowner to paint the ceiling. Whew, I never thought it would happen and now it's one of her favorite things :) And as if you could have made your son's room any more spectacular...you did! It looks GREAT :)

ReplyDeleteLOVE what u did in ur son's room! - and indeed i consider my ceilings too! - in my back porch i stenciled a design on the ceiling (ok i admit it's only 1/4 done, it got too tedious, but i'll finish eventually) .. but i LOVE trim work and details like that!!!

ReplyDeleteYou son's room looks simply fabulous!! I agree - ceilings are a frequently overlooks design opportunity. Don't know if you ever saw my old house but I had a wonderful coffered ceiling with beadboard in my kitchen sitting area - totally made the space!

A mistake with my contractors resulted in a gloriously transformed living room. We punched out some windows and french doors to an added on porch. So we had to repaint the living room. We have a rather wide crown molding in the room to begin with. My husband was talking to the painters and they asked if he wanted the ceiling painted. He said yes. They thought he meant the same color as the walls, so that's what they used. I came home and nearly...hit the ceiling. Then, I lived with it for a while. The room is so big, that painting the ceiling the same color as the walls really warms up the space.
ReplyDeleteWe've also added crown moldings to some of our downstairs rooms. Makes a huge difference in an old farm house like ours, where no two edges are completely square.
